- 3Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah believes that bowlers are the "smart ones" in cricket, as they "don't hide behind a bat" and are well-suited for leadership roles. In an interview with The Indian Express, Bumrah highlighted the success of former captains like Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who led their teams to World Cup victories.
"Bowlers are smart because they have the tough job of getting batsmen out," Bumrah said. "We're not hiding behind a bat or a flat wicket; we're right in the firing line. When a game is lost, it's often the bowlers who are blamed, so it's a challenging role."
He also mentioned the success of bowlers like Pat Cummins as captains and recalled seeing Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in leadership positions during his childhood. "Kapil Dev won us a World Cup, and Imran Khan did the same for Pakistan. So, bowlers are the smart ones," Bumrah asserted.
Bumrah, who has led the Indian team in a Test match and a few T20Is, acknowledged that while batsmen are often more popular, within the Indian team, there is no distinction between batsmen and bowlers. "I understand that our country loves its big batsmen, and that's fair enough, but for me, bowlers drive the game," he added.
